routines

i love routine, i admit. i love the things that you can count on daily, like a lunch break, a morning cup of coffee, the mail.

i like the false sense of organization it gives me, as one who cannot be relied upon to organize herself, and the fact that these small things give structure to my days.

and i've definitely begun to follow routine a lot closer these days: i go for a run every other day (still can't believe it myself), i share dinner every night with a great conversationalist, i practice a standard pre-bed ritual that includes reading just a bit before turning out the light.

and i adore all of these things.

but sometimes you've got to shake it up. eat off the fancy china for no reason at all. drink the whole bottle of wine. go for a run with new scenery. say yes when you would normally say no.

took a trip to the congaree swamp.

i had some shoes to break in, to dirty up, to introduce to the earth.

we walked. and walked. and talked.

and were enamored by the cypress knees and the way the sun shot through the woods.

and then it was announced by a precocious little girl that, "we looked like safari people, telling people the way to go."

and as it turned out she was not alone in thinking so.

my friends from atlanta came to visit.

to watch auburn beat the gamecocks, as it turns out.

I wore my handmade (iron on transfers are so very handy) team gear and got many a compliment on it in line for the bathroom.

where I nearly lost my phone in the stall, phew.

(life without my phone has recently become unfathomable)

the old timey radio belongs to me. I am told I have a thing for old technology.

we spread out chairs and food and coolers.

we enjoyed the cool breeze and warm sun.

we took shots of vodka that went down like water.

probably because they were water.

most likely due to the fact that the man offering them had a fifteen year old son.

and when it was time to go we packed up as quickly as ants disassembling a leaf 100 times their size.

I'm back to drinking deeply from the coffee pot. It seems that in some seasons I am better at keeping my caffeine dependency at bay than in others.

Lately though, I've indulged in pumpkin spice lattes, red eyes, and americanos all the day long.

Most work meetings are made bearable by coffee.

The morning ritual of that first cup helps to keep the day from falling off course.

And old friends can talk about new things, like marriage and babies and changes over a cup made by a coffee bar barista, drip by delicious drip.

rainy weather kept me from my run yesterday so it was a great time to stretch out on the floor in front of the tv with the season's new shows on TiVo and this little book in front of me. My foray into pattern design begins!

Working on some things for sweet babies and watching episodes of The League is a pretty great way to spend an evening. Plus, I just might finish one of my many unfinished projects and that is sure to make a girl feel good about Tuesday before she has to tackle a Wednesday.

technology rant

My phone's contacts were erased last night for the second time since I've had my phone--stupid iTunes synching! And along with them, I lost my photos, some apps, you know stuff I like and want to keep. I was pretty inconsolable last night, so full of frustration and an overwhelming desire to throw my beautiful, gleaming gadget across the room. L was the best. He read to me from Bossy Pants (that Tina Fey!) and let me mope like a child over something so stupid. In the morning he'd formulated a plan and was ready to call Apple for me. What a champ!

But what's done is done, and my evening activities are all planned out, me and two phones on the couch recollecting everyone I know. Bah!

Seems I am always resurrecting old things, rediscovering old themes, restarting what I've stopped. Apply that to today and you've got my old hankering for a blog post, ha.

I guess with school starting and me being so far past my student days this fills my need to begin something new with the season.

And put words and pictures to all my running together days.
